Front cover annotations

Most of the fashion magazine covers follow the same pattern, they all use one person as the front cover key image/dominance. The use of celebrity endorsement makes it more appealing to fans of the specific person. All image shot types are either mid shots or close ups, shows that the producers feel that tensions to detail are important as well as the clothing they are wearing. There are multiple story lines  within the front cover suggesting that they don’t just use the key image to appeal to target audience. The typography used is usually in bold block capitals suggesting that the magazine titles want to be seen first and stand alone to appeal to their TA as well as the actual key image. For example, GQ uses different colours in the titles suggesting that they relate it to what’s in the issue.  The mode of address throughout all front covers is mostly sophisticated and smart, in GQ the majority of males are in suits and the women can be seen to be wearing fashionable dres...

Contents page annotations

In the contents pages studied, there are multiple articles highlighted in different colours, this could be to separate the different headlines within the cover. There are multiple shot types within the contents pages including mid shot, close up and over the shoulder. The typography used varies within the article, this could be suggesting that they are trying to change fonts when headlining different things.  The mode of address used in the contents pages I found suggest that they try to entice the audience with both articles for TA and things that involve the audience. The contents page examples all have white backgrounds, it’s a plain colour however it allows te...

research findings

Research findings From my findings I have found the majority of magazine covers follow the same mise en scene meaning they all have a main cover star and include articles and titles within the front cover. The photography used is very professional, the images are high and in quality detail and there is a reoccurring use of strobe lighting and high key. The representation used in the covers are all positive and usually related to celebrities who are in the current limelight when the magazine issue is produced. The males on front covers are seen as sex objects and in control of all situations they may be in. Overall the representation of males and females in mainstream magazines vary dependant on the target audience, female magazines show males to be sex objects and males vice versa. Typography is very important to magazine covers, it is one of the most appealing aspects of the cover as it immediately shows what the magazine title is, it also can be related to the certain image/artic...
